PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT STAFF MEMBERS ARE MANDATED REPORTERS
A report must be made when the staff member/mandated reporter, suspects or has reason to believe that a child has been abused or neglected. This includes being knowledgable of situations that could be considered dangerous for a child to be present (being left alone at an early age, drug or alcohol abuse in the home, etc.). Mandatory reporters are required to report the facts and circumstances that led them to suspect that a child has been abused or neglected. They do not have the burden of providing proof that abuse or neglect has occurred. In other words, it is our duty, as public school employees, to report any situation in which we have reason to believe a child is being abused or neglected. It is the duty of DCFS then to investigate the case.
